As part of the Canadian tax team, you will be autonomous and able to plan, organize, direct and contribute directly to the management of trusts, estate and post-mortem planning mandates and estate settlements. You will be the client contact person for coordinating and responding to a variety of ad hoc and multidisciplinary requests and queries. You will also be the contact person for the progress of staff assigned to these files. This job requires a variety of interactions with associates, managers and partners, as well as directly with customers.

  • Estate planning
    • Advise entrepreneurs on how to structure their companies, trusts and estates to minimize taxes, including estate taxes, capital gains taxes and other relevant taxes;
    • Draft and revise detailed memorandums setting out the legal, accounting and tax operations that need to be put in place in the event of an estate freeze, withdrawal from business, divorce, etc;
    • Assist our customers and partners in the drafting and analysis of legal documents (wills, shareholder agreements, instructions to the liquidator of an estate, etc.) by providing advice on highly specialized tax issues.
  • Trust management
    • Assist our customers and partners in the drafting and analysis of trust deeds (family, asset protection, testamentary, etc.), providing advice on highly specialized tax issues;
    • Draft and revise detailed memoranda setting out the legal, accounting and tax operations that need to be put in place as part of a trust’s 21st anniversary;
    • Coordinate and review bookkeeping, financial statements and tax returns;
    • Coordinate and collaborate with tax authorities in the event of audits or requests for information.
  • Estate settlement
    • Coordinate and review bookkeeping, financial statements and tax returns, including inventory of assets and liabilities, calculation of taxes due and obtaining clearance certificates;
    • Assist executors and families in the liquidation of estates, including debt settlement, asset distribution, accountability and human aspects;
    • Coordinate and collaborate with tax authorities in the event of audits or requests for information.
  • Post-mortem planning
    • Draft and revise detailed memoranda setting out the legal, accounting and tax operations to be implemented as part of 164(6) ITA or pipeline planning.
  • Customer & employee experience
    • Participate in the preparation of cost estimates, billing and assignment of files;
    • Provide inspirational leadership to your team (coaching, training, performance management, etc.);
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of our procedures and to the growth of the department;
    • Plan, organize, lead and contribute directly to training courses and seminars to keep abreast of best practices and changes in tax laws and regulations relating to trusts and estates;
    • Contribute to publications, blogs and podcasts on current tax and estate planning topics.

  • Relevant tax studies;
  • At least 2-3 years’ experience in a similar position;
  • Knowledge of certain cross-border rules (U.S. estate tax, payments to Canadian non-residents, etc.) to coordinate and collaborate with our U.S. and international tax team;
  • Knowledge of investment, insurance and planning products to optimize their use;
  • Knowledge of matrimonial property regimes and rules governing family assets;
  • Knowledge of income-splitting rules;
  • Knowledge of Caseware, Taxprep and the MS Office suite;
  • Ability to work under pressure, managing several mandates simultaneously while meeting deadlines and commitments;
  • Demonstrate innovation, adaptability and proactivity;
  • Autonomy, rigor, dedicated team player, collaboration oriented, concern to offer an optimal customer experience are essential qualities for the success of this position;
  • Bilingualism (spoken and written) would be an asset.
