Since the primary responsibility of any employer is to demonstrate due diligence, a CNESST-compliant occupational health and safety (OHS) binder can serve as protection in the event of a major accident, proving to the legal authorities that you take health and safety to heart.
What’s in an SST* binder?
The contents of an OHS binder vary from one company to another, depending on its needs.
For example, it may contain :
- The year’s prevention program
- Policies / procedures / programs
- Forms
- Inspection sheets
- Inventories
- and much more!
What is a prevention program?
The prevention program is a simple, practical action plan specific to each establishment, designed to eliminate or control the hazards that cause accidents or illnesses in the workplace.
Drawn up by the employer, with the participation of workers, the program must contain an overview of the main sources of danger, a grid for selecting means of prevention, and examples of how to use the approach and the prevention sheet.
This is the main prevention tool provided for in the Act respecting occupational health and safety. Among other things, it helps you demonstrate to the legal authorities that prevention is an integral part of your business.
What’s in the prevention program?
-
- The main sources of danger;
- Regulations and standards;
- Personal protective equipment to protect workers;
- Monitoring and maintenance measures;
- The training needs to be met and the means implemented to achieve them.
- Employers in certain sectors of activity and/or those who are members of a mutual insurance company are obliged to draw up a prevention program.

In addition to preventing exemptions that may be issued by CNESST inspectors, you can benefit from training (e.g. on accident management, WHMIS-HSIS, etc.) and put all the chances on your side for the successful implementation of your new policies and procedures in your company.
