COVID-19: Essential Worker Retention Incentive Program (EWRIP)

This program is designed to compensate essential workers who earn less than the Canada Emergency Benefit (CEP).

Eligible workers will be entitled to a premium of $100 per week for a period of 16 weeks. This measure applies retroactively to March 15, 2020.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the program, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Work in an essential sector(refer to government list)
  • Be at least 15 years old at the time of application
  • Earn a gross salary of $550 a week or less (for a person working 40 hours a week, we’re talking about a maximum hourly rate of $13.75/hour).
  • Have an annual working income of at least $5,000 (calculated before the benefit)
  • Total annual income of $28,600 or less (calculated before the benefit)
  • Reside in Quebec on December 31, 2019 and plan to remain there throughout 2020

A person cannot receive the WITP for a week if he or she has received the ECP, the Canada Student Emergency Benefit (CSEB) or an amount from the Temporary Worker’s Assistance Program (TWAP) for that week.

However, a person remains eligible for the WITP if his or her employer receives government assistance for wages paid by the employer (for example, the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy).
